Unlike manual valves that are operated manually in order to perform the task, an actuated valve is a mechanical device that uses a power source in stead of manual intervention in order to operate the valve. The power source for an actuated valve could be electric, pneumatic or hydraulic.

By using a source of energy such as compressed air, hydraulic oil or electricity, allows the valve to be adjusted remotely.

There are two main types of actuators that are used to operate actuated valves, rotary and linear. As implied, a rotary actuated valve produces a rotational motion whereas as linear valves requires an actuator that operates in a linear motion in order for the valve to operate.

SOLENOID VALVES.

A solenoid valve is an electrically operated valve that when electrically energised or de-energised shut’s off or allows fluid to flow through the valve. Solenoid valves can only be used for clean liquids and gases and operate with an electric coil with a movable plunger in the centre.

Solenoid valves can be used in a wide range of applications and are commonly found in heating systems such as vacuum, irrigation and compressed air. Applications that use solenoid valves can have either low or high pressures and either small or large flow rates.

There are also a few different variants of Solenoid Valves either direct acting or pilot operated. For context a pilot operated valve make use of the system line pressure to open and close the valve whereas a direct acting solenoid valve opens and closes the main valve opening itself.
